Hand Carved Ceramic Bowl | Bear Paw by Patrick Leach

These hand carved ceramics by St’át’imc/T’ít’q’et/Coast Salish artist Patrick Leach beautifully evoke historical design while maintaining a vibrant modern colour palette. Titled Bear Paw, this bowl is hand carved with the titular central bear paw figure surrounded by an abstract weaving pattern and features a beautiful hand painted rim in bright blue or red.

Considered the elder kinsman that teaches the legends and dances, the Bear is a symbol of strength and is always respected and treated as a high-ranking guest.

Carved using a technique called sgraffito, which involves layering glazes which are then hand-carved after firing to reveal the contrasting clay colours beneath. Patrick's one-of-a-kind finished pieces featuring imagery that represents Coast Salish landscapes, geometrics, and scenes from ancient and traditional rock paintings and basket weavings.
