Northern Tuchone artist Richard Shorty was born in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in 1959. He is a self-taught artist who in early 1980’s started painting in the West Coast style and soon developed his own distinct look. Today, Shorty is one of the most sought after Indigenous artists  with his designs adorning giftware all over Canada. He is very versatile, working on drums, paddles, masks and rattles in addition to his paintings.
