Hand carved by Coast Salish artist Jim Yelton Jr. these Talking Sticks are a beautiful addition to any board room, classroom or home. Traditionally used as staffs or sceptres, the holder of a Talking Stick is entitled to share their views and be heard with respect, before passing the stick on to another speaker. For generations, ceremonial staffs have been in use within West Coast First Nations Communities particularity by a Speaker or Chief during Potlatches and other occasions. Talking sticks represent authority and teaching.

The Bear is a symbol of authority and wisdom. Bear is a well-respected member of the community and sometime referred to as the protector of the forests. 

The Raven is the transformer and the creator, Raven placed the sun and moon in the sky so the world would have light and also put the trees on land and fish in water. This primordial creature opened the clamshell to release the first man. He is known for his knowledge, trickery and creativity.

The Thunderbird is a supernatural being and symbol of power. They live in the mountains and have lightning sticks under their wings. As thunder rolls, eyes blink and lightning flashes.

Jim Yelton was born in Squamish, British Columbia in 1955 and has been carving his entire life. The skill of carving was pasted down to Jim from his father, Michael Yelton who taught him about the Northwest Coast First Nations traditions of his cultural and how they applied to his art form. For over 30 years, Jim has been carving cedar wood and specializes in Masks, Feast Dishes, Canoe Paddles and most of all, Talking Sticks.
