Speném (Plant)

"An expression of gratitude for all that plants teach us. As you spend time on this mat you’re invited to connect with the plants and remember them by their Sḵwx̱wú7mesh names."

Introducing the Resurgence Collection by Nicole Lawson of Supported Soul and Leigh Joseph of Sḵwálwen Botanicals. Deeply rooted in strengthening the union of mind, body and spirit the resergence collection invites Indigenous cultural context and representation into spaces where we connect to ourselves through yoga, movement, and breath. Leigh and Nicole hope to encourage more Indigenous people to discover yoga as a supportive and healing practice in their lives.

Made from Eco-friendly, biodegradable and recycled materials, and printed with plant designs by Coast Salish artist Ocean Hyland, this beautiful yoga mat celebrates Coast Salish artwork and Indigenous plant knowledge by incorporating Sḵwx̱wú7mesh plant forms and names into the design. This mat can also be used as a towel and features a soft cushioning surface to offer support and comfort while you move and pose.

Proceeds from the Resurgence Collection will be donated to the hiýám Project; a collaboration between Saanich Native Plants and Sḵwálwen Botanicals this project facilitates the distribution and planting of thousands of seeds across the lands of Indigenous communities on the Northwest Coast.

Sḵwálwen Botanicals is an Indigenous Owned and Operated Company founded by ethnobotanist Styawat (Leigh Joseph)Sḵwálwen (skwall-a-win) translates to “heart” or “essence of being” in the Squamish language. This name was chosen to represent the inspiration behind the business: building connections to the land through working with plants in a way that feeds one’s heart and spirit. Their Indigenous skincare line incorporates respectfully harvested botanicals, organic oils, nourishing plant-derived butters and steam distilled essential oils. Their products are handmade in small batches on the Unceded Ancestral and Traditional Territories of the Skwxẃu7mesh (Squamish) First Nation.

Ocean Hyland is an artist who works in the realms and media of painting, engraving, wood carving, and digital design. Along with her practices she enjoys learning about ethnobotany. Ocean currently lives in Qualicum Bay on Vancouver Island. On her matrilineal side she is Tsleil Waututh, Squamish, Cheam, Hawaiian, and Chinese. Through her father she is Scottish and Irish. The richness and diversity of her cultural heritage is what inspires Ocean in her many art practices. Ocean has studied at both Native education college specializing in NWC jewelry arts, and at Simon Fraser University focusing on the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim, building up her proficiency in one of her mother tongues. She has also gained valuable knowledge apprenticing with creators `Zachary George and Aaron Nelson Moody.
