Joe Wilson is a Coast Salish artist born in 1967 in Koksilah, BC. He is a member of the Cowichan Band based on Vancouver Island. He has been carving since the age of 17. Although mainly self-taught, Joe worked under Hesquiaht/Nuu-chah-nulth artist Tim Paul, and the late Coast Salish master carver Simon Charlie. Joe is deeply involved in the winter ceremonies of his people, and his artwork is defined by his attention to detail and use of unconventional colours.

Salmon are honored and celebrated by many of the Coastal Nations in B.C. and are a powerful symbol of regeneration, self-sacrifice, and perseverance. Shortages of Salmon are traditionally attributed to human disrespect and refusal to live by advice of the elders. The skill of preparing and storing Salmon is much greater than that required in catching them – women are seen as the keepers of the Nation’s most valuable catch and cache. Therefore, there is a connection between women, regeneration, and all that salmon can provide for the community.
