Although mainly self-taught, Joe worked under Hesquiaht/Nuu-chah-nulth artist Tim Paul, and the late Coast Salish master carver Simon Charlie. Joe is deeply involved in the winter ceremonies of his people, and his artwork is defined by his attention to detail and use of unconventional colours.
